So, in the course of our travels, we are back at the in-law's place and I noticed a book called "Glenn Beck's Common Sense." After seeing the book, I thought, 'Hey, I like common sense!' so I picked it up and began reading.
It turns out that the book is inspired by Thomas Paine and his book "Common Sense" that illustrated what he deemed to be flaws in the system of government in his day... 7 months before the Deceleration of Independence was signed.
Anyhow, here are a few parts that I think stand out in the first chapter [the only one I'll get to while here].
"Where are the Americans who will stop talking about the president or the parties and instead start talking about right and wrong?" pg 9
"I sincerely believe that no discussion or debate is un-American. I agree with the Founding Fathers that it is only on the battlefield of ideas that the best ones can be recognized and ultimately prevail. Only those afraid of the truth seek to silence debate, intimidate those with whom they disagree, or slander their ideological counterparts. Those who know they are right have no reason to stifle debate because they realize that all opposing arguments will ultimatly be overcome by fact." pg 17
The preceeding one is kinda ironic, because I immediatly thought of Bill O'Reilly.
"And if you think that things would be different if your partywas in power, or that things will be different now because your side won, think again. Both parties have betrayed our founding principles and we have lost sight of the fact that the only side that matters is the one in step with the principles of the Republic." pg 19
Thoughts?

I think I want to read both of those books. Well, reread in the case of the Thomas Paine one.
I just pulled out Thomas Paine's Common Sense. It’s been sitting on my bookshelf for a year. I can't wait to read it. (I need to finish "Truman" first) My dad said that Glenn Beck's Common Sense was so good he read half of it in one night. You'll have to let me know how you like it after you've read the whole thing.
PS. I believe the whole party quote and it’s why we don’t belong to either party. They are both messed up. I wish they’d try to fix the problems facing our country instead of trying to blame each other for them.
That book is at the top of my list (just under my current textbooks). I'd like to hear your thoughts once you're done. Although I have spent so much time and energy defending the Republican Party from constant attacks (mainly from classmates and professors), I am done with them. I am so sick of everyone being scared of saying what they believe, doing what is right, and standing up for the Constitution. That goes for both parties.
I am actaully seriously considering starting a new political party myself...
I like Glen Beck when he writes, not so much when he speaks. Glen Beck is far too dramatic when he speaks making him an easy person for liberals to lampoon and stereotype the conservative movement.
The behavior of conservatives like Beck and Rush is why I am such a big fan of George Will. George Will is the Neal A Maxwell of conservatives.
